Henry van de Velde will always serve as Lucien De Roeck’s example. He taught him to erase anything superfluous, everything which doesn’t directly contribute to the drawing. Simplifying subjects, the rough sketches, the scarce use of colours, these will all become De Roeck’s absolute artistic standards.
