There was no such thing as ready-made fonts at the start of Lucien De Roeck’s professional life. The transfer printing process did not yet exist. There weren’t any photocopying machines yet. Typographers did not have the number of fonts found in today’s simplest computer in the days of lead sets. They needed the full fonts in lead for the texts, and in wood for the large characters on posters, in all possible sizes. Back in those days you needed to draw a text to get it into the desired format and required family. And this is an area where Lucien De Roeck absolutely excelled.
